Compared to other provinces, Ile-de-France is heavily populated. Ile-de-France is home to approximately 18% of France's total population (almost one-fifth). The region has the highest concentration of business and industry in France. Auto motives, electronics, clothing, pharmaceuticals, restaurants, and countless other businesses are all based and developed in this area. Ile-de-France is also an area of government, as all government departments and public authority headquarters are located there. Both education and research thrive in this region, with about 9,000 schools in Paris alone. Paris also has the highest concentration of university students in Europe.
